Holton Girls and Sabetha Boys Win First Games of 2023

GIRLS = Holton 45, Sabetha 42

After three lead changes in the first quarter, Holton took a 14-11 lead heading into the second period and never trailed again. The Wildcats held a 23-19 advantage at halftime and ballooned the margin to 31-19 early in the third quarter. But Mary Lukert brought the Blueajys all the way back to tie the score at 33 early in the fourth stanza as she scored 10 points in the 14-2 Bluejay run.

The Willdcats then struggled against the Sabetha full-court press and committed 9 of their 24 turnovers in the final eight minutes, but got three free throws from Brooke Flewelling in the last 20 seconds to hold on for the road win. 

Brooke Willcott led Holton with 15 points while Grace Etzel and Kaiya Taylor combined to make five of the six Wildcat treys to score 15 points against Sabetha's 2-3 zone. Tiara Dodd added seven points and Holton made 9 of 15 free throws to improve to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Big 7. 

Lukert finished with 20 points, but then the scoring droped dramatically as Halle Scoby scored seven and Alexia Hayden added six points making two of the three Jays triples. Sabetha was just 5 of 7 at the charity stripe and is now also 3-4 overall and 2-3 in League play. 

BOYS = Sabetha 72, Holton 57

Both teams came into the new year undefeated in Big 7 play, but Matthew Garber hit a long buzzer-beating shot just inside half court to put Sabetha ahead 18-12 and then the Bluejays went on a 15-0 run to begin the second period and shoot Holton out of the gym. 

Leading 35-17 at intermission, Sabetha continued their hot shooting with 24 points in the third quarter and had the lead as big as 28 points. The Jays led 59-33 entering the fourth frame before Holton scored some late points to make the final score more respectable. 

Sabetha was 11-14 at the line and made 8 trifecta's with four players scoring all their points until a free throw in the closing minute. Christian McAfee was a beast inside with 24 points while David Rokey aded 17. Marcus Bauman and Matthew Garber each hit three treys and had 15 and 14 points, respectively as #2 ranked Sabetha stayed perfect at 7-0 on the season. 

Holton got 25 points from Tyson Snyder and 10 in the second half by Parker Crouch with Matt Lierz chipping in nine. The Wildcats are now 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the BIg 7. They will play at another league unbeaten in Perry Lecompton on Tuesday while Sabetha is done with their home games for the month and plays at Hiawatha and Perry next week.
