It was a beautiful day for tennis action this past Monday and the Hiawatha Red Hawks traveled to Atchison to square off with the Lady Red of Atchison in a dual matchup that featured eight singles matches and a pair of doubles competitions.

At the end of the day it was the Red Hawks coming out on top over Atchison in five of the eight singles competitions, going 6-4 in action while the teams split the two doubles competitions.

Many of the singles bouts proved to be close ones between the two squad, especially the matchup of Morgan O'Noines and Jamie Clary the number girls for Atchison and Hiawatha, respectively. Clary pushed her way to the ultimate win 8-7, but it came via the tiebreaker which she won 7-5. Kaitla Wilson took home another close win for the Red Hawks as she topped Maddy Gonzalez 8-6 in that match; Wilson also beat Ann Askran in another match grabbing a 6-3 win.

Lydia Lierz, Morgan Ward and Becca Knudson also registered wins for the Red Hawks winning their matches by the scores of 8-1 (over Haven Fry), 8-5 (over Makayla Ernzen) and 6-2 (over Makayla Fry), respectively.

For the Lady Red of Atchison it was Celina Brinkley, Ann Askran and Maddy Gonzalez notching wins in singles competition. Maddy competed twice in her second match beating Naomi Bicker, 8-3. Brinkley won her match 8-5 over Tara Coots, while Askran won 8-4 over Sadie Miller.

In the doubles competitions it was a split of the two contests between the Red Hawks and Lady Red. For Hiawatha the tandem of Tara Coots and Morgan Ward took home a 8-5 win over Makayla Ernzen and Ann Askran for Atchison. Atchison saw their doubles team of Haven Fry and Celina Brinkley notch a 8-6 win over Cori Herrera and Lydia Lierz of Hiawatha.

Hiawatha looks to take their momentum from the dual into their final competition of the regular season coming up Thursday (October 3rd) as they compete in the Bonner Springs Invite. While, Atchison gets ready for their final action of the season coming up Thursday, also as they will partake in the Lafayette Invite.
