In the first Northeast Kansas League football game, Jackson Heights was impressive in posting a 26-0 victory against Horton on Friday night.  The Chargers had four turnovers, failed to recover the second half kickoff, and went 0-4 in the redzone while rushing for only 36 yards.

Coming off a winning season and playoff appearance, the Cobras drove 80 yards on just 7 plays to open the game under second year Coach Caleb Wick.  Tim Rupnicki scored on a four-yard-run to make it 6-0.  After back to back interceptions, the Cobras were pinned at their own one-yard-line when returning junior quarterback, Korby Strube found senior tight end Cole Olberding over the middle for a 99 yard touchdown pass.  The two-point-conversion run by Rupnicki made it 14-0 with 4:02 to play in the opening quarter.  It would be the only completed pass in three attempts for Jackson Heights on the night.

After a Horton fumble on their own 5 yard line, Strube ran a QB draw for a second quarter touchdown to put Jackson Heights up 20-0 at halftime.  After gaining only 59 yards total in the first half, the Chargers failed to recover a high short kick to begin the third quarter and the Cobras drove 7 plays and put the game away with Tim Rupnicki's second TD run of the game.

Nate Bryan led the balanced wishbone ground game for Jackson Heights with 82 yards on 9 carries while Rupnicki had 68 yards and 2 scores.

Jordan Matthias had 7 carries for 35 yards to led Horton on the ground and Josh Allen had 5 receptions for a team-high 91 yards.  Dakota Bayles added 54 yards on 4 catches and 5 different Chargers caught a pass.  Horton did throw for 242 yards on 14 of 25 passing but couldn't overcome costly mistakes and capitalize in the redzone.  Derek Stone was 10-19 for 168 yards passing and Derek Richardson played the fourth quarter going 4 of 6 for 38 yards in the air.

The defense was spectacular for Jackson Heights and forced four turnovers.  Josh Skillet recovered two fumbles to earn Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha "Player to Bank On" honors.

Jackson Heights (1-0) will host Oskaloosa (1-0) in another Northeast Kansas League matchup in week two while Horton (0-1) return home to face ACCHS (0-1).
