Nine Area Softball Stars Named to 2013 KSCA All-State Teams

Nine area softball players earned All-State honors for the 2013 season given out by the Kansas Softball Coaches Association.

Two players earned second team honors in Class 4A, while five players earned honors in Class 3A with three registering first team honors and the other two second team honors. In Class 2-1A two area softball stars earned All-State honors, one taking first team honors, while the other grabbed second team honors.

In Class 4A it was a pair of Big Seven League players earning second team All-State honors, as Holton Wildcat junior, Cassidy Merriman and Perry Lecompton Kaw senior, Jordan Erickson took home those honors at infiled and outfield spots, respectively. Merriman helped the Wildcats to a 10-9 record this past season while lighting up the stat book with a sizzling bat all season, touting a .530 batting average, 35 hits, 33 RBI, 32 runs scored, seven doubles and seven home runs. The first team All-Big Seven player also register 15 stolen bases for the Wildcats. Erickson also took home first team All-Big Seven league honors as Perry Lecompton finished 4-15 on the season.

Class 3A featured the most area athletes on the All-State teams with five players registering great years to earn All-State honors. First team honors went out to three Marysville Bulldogs after a 15-8 season that saw the Bulldogs take home a third place finish at state this year. Leading the way offensively and on the mound was junior, Dani Fincham earning the honors as a pitcher. Fincham posted a 1.47 ERA on the season with seven shutouts, 117 strikeouts and only 27 walks, while touting a .524 batting average with 33 hits on the year. Junior, Lacy Uhlik and senior, Dani Schwarz got their first team honors at the infield and outfield spots, respectively after great offensive years. Uhlik posted a .414 batting average with 29 hits, 21 RBI and 22 runs scored. Schwarz but up 31 hits, 20 runs scored and 20 RBI while batting .443 ont the season for Marysville.

Two other area players earned All-State honors in Class 3A, as Pleasant Ridge senior, Shyanne Robinson and Riverside junior, Erica Halter grabbed second team honors both in the infield. Both Robinson and Halter earned first team All-DVL honors this past year as Robinson helped Pleasant Ridge to a 14-6 record and Halter and Riverside finished 6-11. Robinson will look to continue her success on the diamond in college next year at Highland.

In Class 2-1A two area athletes earned All-State honors as McLouth junior, Konner Patterson earned first team honors and Oskaloosa freshman, Haidyn Bassett took home second team honors. Patterson for the third straight year earned All-State honors, on top of first team All-DVL honors in the infield this year. Konner helped McLouth to a 16-5 record this year and a spot in the Regional championship where they fell to Oskaloosa. Patterson posted 48 hits, 42 RBI, 11 homers, seven triples and nine doubles to lead the offense for the Bulldogs.

While, Bassett took home her second team honors at the pitcher position after leading Oskaloosa to an undefeated record throughout action until the state tournament were the Bears finished fourth at state and 20-2 on the year. Haidyn pitched in nearly everything game this year for Bears as a freshman, posting a 16-2 record with a 1.12 ERA, 239 strikeouts and only 17 walks.

Two area teams finishing in the top four at state this year and many top individual performances helped the area earn nine softball players on the All-State teams.
