Sabetha and Silver Lake split Big East League football title

The Sabetha Blue Jays and Silver Lake Eagles have been two of the best teams in the area and in all of Class 2A this season on the gridiron.

Both teams finished the year 8-0 and are top seeds on the East side of the playoff bracket. Silver Lake is the #1 overall seed, after dominating every team they played in the regular season. Their closest contest was a 42-27 win over Rossville in week two. The Eagles play West Franklin on Thursday at 7 p.m. at home in the first round of the playoffs. Silver Lake beat West Franklin, 77-6 in week five. The Eagles have been the #2 team in Class 2A all season.

Sabetha, who has been the #1 team in Class 2A this season from the jump, is the 3 seed on the East side of the playoff bracket. They will host Cherryvale on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a first round playoff game. Sabetha won three close games this season, all at home. Week two in overtime over Nemaha Central, 21-14. Week four against St. Mary's 21-18 and week five against Riverside 28-21. They have been battle tested.

Sabetha finished 5-0 in league play, Silver Lake 4-0. The Big East is one of the toughest leagues to play in. These two didn't play each other in the regular season, but have high playoff aspirations. They might meet up in the playoffs at some point, but for the time being, will share the Big East League football league title.
