Hewins Sets School Rushing Record Again as Riverside Shuts Out Centralia 41-0
Charles Hewins rushed for a school-record 343 yards and five touchdowns, while Riverside’s defense forced five turnovers to lead the Cyclones to a dominant 41-0 victory over Centralia on Friday night at home.
Hewins, who set the school’s single-game rushing record with 334 yards in Riverside’s Week one win over Jefferson County North, broke his own record for the second time this season against the Panthers. He finished with 343 yards on just 20 carries, continuing a remarkable season for the Cyclones’ standout freshman running back that has him now over 1,300 yards and 21 touchdowns through his first six career games.
Hewins found the end zone on touchdown runs of 38, 33, 65, 60 and 61 yards. Riverside held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter before pulling away in the second quarter to take a commanding 28-0 advantage into halftime. Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Hewins added two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth to help seal the shutout victory.
The Cyclones’ defense played a major role in the win, forcing five turnovers and consistently creating opportunities for the offense. Zayden Euler made his presence felt in the first half with an interception and a 20-yard fumble return for a touchdown. In the second half, Gavin Schoenfelder recorded multiple tackles for loss, a sack, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery.
Centralia struggled to protect the football, turning it over on four consecutive first-half possessions. Those mistakes proved costly, as Riverside converted the opportunities into three touchdowns to build its sizable halftime lead.
With the victory, Riverside improved to 5-1 overall, while Centralia saw its three-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 3-3 on the season.
The Cyclones will return home next Friday night for a Week 7 district matchup against Pleasant Ridge. Centralia will look to bounce back on the road in district play when the Panthers travel to Jackson Heights.
