Perry-Lecompton Beats Hiawatha for First Win of the Season

The Perry-Lecompton football team beat Hiawatha on Friday night 44-8 for their first victory of the season. 

The Kaws (1-1, 1-1) led 8-0 after the first quarter thanks to a five-yard touchdown run by quarterback AJ Campbell. 

The Redhawks (0-2, 0-1) tied the game early in the second quarter as they got a 34-yard touchdown run from Grayson Gilbert. 

Perry followed with a Tanner Wheat six-yard touchdown run to regain the lead at 16-8. Hiawatha would fumble on their next possession that led to a scoop-and-score by Kayden Baker to give the Kaws a 23-8 lead. 

Ultimately the Kaws would score 29 points in the second quarter and would lead the game 37-8 at halftime en route to their first win of the season. 

Campbell was the KNZA Player of the Game as he finished 10-for-12 passing for 117 yards and a touchdown while adding 92 rushing yards and three more scores. Wheat finished with 17 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown. 

Gilbert led the Redhawks rushing attack with 18 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown. 

Perry-Lecompton will travel to St. Marys in week three while Hiawatha will have their home opener against Sabetha.
