Corning beats Seneca in rain shorted game; drops late night affair to Marysville
Seneca vs Corning:
In the first game of the evening, it was Corning riding a 6-run second inninng, on their way to a 10-1 win against Seneca. Corning got one run in the bottom of the first, stealing home, on a double steal attempt. The second inning, they kept the line moving. Three straight singles from Cameron Kramer, Isaac Wegner and Quentin Aldefer, loaded the bases with nobody out. A sac fly, RBI single and two bases loaded walks put Corning up 5-0. They got two more runs on a throwing error by Seneca. Ben Haverkamp would hit an RBI single in the third inning to make it 8-0.
Corning got a great effort on the mound from two different pitchers, Hayden Schultejans got the start, going 2.2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 0 runs, striking out 5. Isaac Wegner went 2 innnings, allwing 2 hits, 1 runs, striking out 4.
For Seneca, they got their lone run on a bases loaded walk. Jackson Haverkamp took the loss, going 1.2 innings, allowing 5 hits, 7 runs (4 earned), walking 6 batters.
The game started the 6th inninng, but a storm rolled through, cutting it short. Seneca plays an elimination game Friday at 10 a.m. in Wathena against Clifton-Clyde.
Corning vs Marysville
After the storm in Seneca, the second game was moved up to Sabetha, with a 9 p.m. start time. And Marysville's three run third inning proved to be the difference, defeating Corning 7-2.
Jordan Miller got the start on the bump for Marysville, going 2.2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 run, walking 4. The only real trouble he ran into was the top of the 3rd, when Corning scored on a bases loaded walk by Ben Haverkamp. Peyton Adams came in and struck out the next batter to end the threat however.
Marysville scored in the bottom of the first after a two out single from Alex Scheele, who went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Gavin LeDuc.
The third inning, Marysville got frenzy hitting, and stole bases aggressively, to score three runs. Eli Ketter led off with an infield single, stole two bases and scored on Henry Ketter's single. Henry then stole second and scored on Scheele's sacrifice fly. Grant Haefele scored on a throwing error, putting Marysville up 4-1 after three innings.
They would score one run in each of the next 3 innings, to push their lead to 7-1, going to the top of the 7th. Corning got a run with a bases loaded double play, making it 7-2, which was the final.
Ben Haverkamp went all 6 innings for Corning, allowing 9 hits, 7 runs, 4 walks, while striking out 8. Peyton Adams was the winning pitcher for Marysville, going 2.2 innings, allowing 0 runs, 0 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1. Ty Hager got the save, going an inning and two thirds, allowing 2 hits, 1 run, walking 2 and striking out 1.
Corning plays an elimination game on Friday in Wathena at 12:30 p.m. against Smith Center. Marysville plays a winner's bracket game at 7:30 p.m. in Wathena against Doniphan County.
All three of those games will be broadcast on 103.9 KNZA on Friday.
