The Hiawatha Lady Redhawks traveled to St. Marys on Thursday, March 27th, for their first-ever Big East League softball matchup. After winning only one game last year, Coach Nelson and the girls wanted to make a statement not to count out this talented group of players.

With returners Adison Williams, Claire Twombly, Maddy Simmons, Kylie Nelson, Kenzie Nelson, Quinn Boye, Kaeleigh Ruckman, Paige Mueller, and Saige Stover, and adding Brynnan Boye, Michaela Williams, Henley Shoemaker, and Makenzie Shefferd, they were the first to get on the board in the third inning against the Bears.

That was the only scoring done in the night's first matchup, but the star wasn't from the bats but from the pitching. Junior Adison Williams took the circle and struck out ten batters, only walking one, and with the defense letting no runs score in seven innings. Claire Twombly was hot for the bats, with three hits and three at-bats. The Redhawks finished this game with their first win of the year and first going towards league records with a score of 1-0.

However, the real scoring came in the nightcap. Kenzie Nelson got on the board first in the first with a triple and then scored on an error. Maddy Simmons also hit two deep to center field, which was fielded by the Bears but got runners moving for Hiawatha. Adison Williams and Kylie Nelson were also successful at the plate and stole multiple bases on the night.

But again, Claire Twombly took the batter's box by storm and hit her first-ever over-the-fence home run. Brynnan Boye was in the circle for the Hawks as she struck out seven, walked three, and gave up one run on the night. The Redhawks came out with the win 9-1.
