GIRLS = Holton 55, Sabetha 27
The Holton girls scored the first seven points of the game and turned a 15-5 first quarter lead into a 55-27 win against Sabetha on Friday night. The Lady Wildcats led 27-14 at halftime and came out of the locker room with a 17-7 third quarter to put the game away.
All four Holton seniors had big nights as Brooke Willcott had 15 points, Elizabeth Schuster scored 14, Kaiya Taylor hit three triples and added 10, while Lora Larison chipped in two points as well. Holton force 18 turnovers and improved to 10-9 on the season while winning for the fourth time in their past five games, and the lone loss earlier in the week at ranked and one-loss Osage City by five points.
Sabetha got three treys from Kiara Keim and Paxton Michael who led the Lady Jays with 14 points, but the rest of the team combined for just four total points. Sabetha girls fall to 3-16 on the season.
BOYS = Holton 50, Sabetha 48
It was only fitting on senior night that one of the hardest working seniors would get a game winning putback as time expired and walk off the court with only his second basket of the season. Holton's Logan Altenburg rebounded a long three missed by Korbin Fox and got the stick back to beat the buzzer and secure the 50-48 win in the Wildcats final home game.
Altenburg got the senior night start and played some key minutes before coming back in the game with 39 seconds left when starting point guard Bodie Dillon fouled out. With the game tied at 48, Sabetha held the ball but then drove and got a charging foul with six seconds remaining setting up Holton's final heroics.
In a back and forth game, Holton led 45-38, before Sabetha went on a 10-0 run fueled by Mitchell Kramer and Kyler Wenger, and the Jays took advantage of a couple turnovers to take a 48-45 lead. However, Kerrick DeDonder hit a triple to tie the game before the final two possessions.
Holton led 14-9 after one quarter but it was Sabetha ahead 25-21 at halftime. The Bluejays led by as many as 8 points in the third period before Holton came back to get a bucket and go ahead 37-35 heading into the fourth. That final period started with a Fox trifecta's to give the Cats a 40-35 margin.
Luke Lassey scored 14 points, including six in the first quarter for Holton and converted a couple huge three-point-plays in the second half. He also had a blocked shot in the fourth quarter and took the charge that gave Holton a change at the end to win it. DeDeonder and Fox each scored 11 points and Dillon hit a pair of three's to snap a five-game losing stream for the Wildcats who improved to 6-13 on the season.
Wenger scored 18 and Kramer had 16 and they had all 13 points for Sabetha in the fourth quarter before seeing a three-game win steak snapped and falling to 11-8 on the year.
Sabetha will wrap up their regular season at rival Nemaha Central on Monday while Holton finishes their campaign at rival Royal Valley on Tuesday.
