The 11th Annual Thunder Classic boys basketball tournament opened up with quarterfinal games on Tuesday night with three broadcasts on 103.9 KNZA.
Holton 37, St. Marys 63
The Wildcats and Bears got out to a good pace in the first quarter with St. Marys leading the game 18-14 after the first quarter.
Brady Hurla drilled a near half-court buzzer beater to end the half to give the Bears a 30-23 halftime lead.
St. Marys would dominate the second half outscoring Holton 33-14 on their way to the victory.
Ben DeVader led the undefeated Bears with 20 points while Hurla chipped in with 13 points. St. Marys hit 11 three-pointers and only turned the ball over six times.
The Wildcats were ledy by Brayden Peek with nine points while Brody Meyer added seven points. Holton finished the game with 19 turnovers.
Jackson Heights 18, Troy 50
Troy dominated this game in the second and third quarters. The Trojans led the game 14-9 after the first quarter but would outscore the Cobras 13-1 in the second quarter to lead the game 27-10 at halftime.
They would continue on that dominance in the third quarter as they outscored Jackson Heights 17-2 and would lead the game 44-12 going into the fourth quarter.
Seven players scored for Troy led by Henry Geiger with 12 points while Jack Hartman pitched in with 10 points.
The Cobras had 23 turnovers and were led in scoring by Drake Mellies with five points.
Hiawatha 32, Nemaha Central 52
The Thunder defense was stout through the first three quarters holding the Redhawks to five points in the first quarter, five points in the second quarter, and three points in the third quarter.
Nemaha Central's lead was 34-13 going into the fourth quarter but Hiawatha made a late push and got to within 14 within the first few minutes of the frame but the hole was too big to climb out of.
10 players scored in the game for the undefeated Thunder led by Evan Olberding with 10 points. Colby Frehe scored eight points, added 12 rebounds and five blocks.
Ethan Morton led Hiawatha with 10 points while Cameron Boswell added eight points.
Nemaha Central outrebounded Hiawatha 32-16, and the Thunder finished the game 18-of-24 from the free throw line.
