Valley Heights is headed back to state for the fourth time in the past five seasons after winning their sub-state championship against Wabaunsee in Wabaunsee by a final score of 51-45.
This was after a blowout win in the semifinal round over Bennington by a final score of 53-29, and a sizable win in the quarterfinal round against Republic County with a final score of 60-26. The Mustangs enter the tournament having won eight in a row since a 54-50 loss to Centralia on February 9th.
Before clinching the tournament, Valley Heights finished tied for second place with Frankfort and Hanover in the Twin Valley League with a league record of 9-2.
Valley Heights will be the 8-seed, and they have a very difficult challenge ahead of them against one-seed Wichita County.
The Indians haven’t dropped a game yet this season and are hoping for the school’s first-ever state title. Wichita County made the state tournament a year ago, but they fell in the first round to eventual fourth-place Hillsboro.
The Indians are notorious for their offensive firepower which scored 60+ points in 17 of their 23 games, and in seven of their games they scored 70 or more.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and will be broadcast on 92.1 FM KMZA.
