The Axtell boys basketball team is returning to the Class 1A-II State Tournament after beating Hanover 61-55 in the Sub-State Title game on Saturday.

The Eagles finished fourth place in Great Bend last season and will look to improve on that finish in 2024. Axtell will be looking for their first State Title since 2012-2013.

Head coach Jayson Tynon has led the Eagles to four State Tournament appearances in his nine years at the helm of the program.

The only two losses this season for the Eagles were against Frankfort and Clifton-Clyde and they will enter the State Tournament on an eight-game winning streak.

Axtell has three players averaging double figure points per game with Eli Broxterman at 13.6, Brandon Schmelzle at 13.5, and Colin Shaughnessy at 11.4.

At 21-2 overall, Axtell will enter this season’s State Tournament as the #2-seed and they will face #7-seed (14-7) Beloit St. Johns Tipton at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, March 6th in Great Bend.

KMZA 92.1 FM will be carrying all Axtell games from Great Bend.
