The AA Legion Baseball Zone Tournament at Sabetha continued Monday night with winner’s bracket games, and it will be Doniphan County and Marysville who will meet up in the winner’s bracket final Wednesday night.

Haggard Leads Marysville to Upset of Corning

Behind a strong pitching performance from Jon Haggard, Marysville picked up their second victory in as many nights in a 4-0 shutout of two-seeded Corning.

Haggard was tremendous throughout, holding Corning to just two hits in six innings of work while striking out seven and only walking one.

He also delivered a big hit at the plate, driving in two on a double in the fourth inning which gave Marysville a 2-0 lead.

Zach Haefele added another Marysville run on a single in the fifth inning before Caden Brinegar singled in the final run in the sixth.

Brinegar was the only Marysville player with two hits in the game while Corning’s two hits in the contest came from Ian Haverkamp and Austin Holthaus.

Marysville heads into the winner’s bracket championship Wednesday night at 8 p.m., while Corning will face Seneca in the loser’s bracket Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

Errors Cost Sabetha in Loss to Doniphan County

In a winner’s bracket upset, Doniphan County took advantage of five Sabetha errors and a strong pitching performance from Alex Libel in a 6-2 upset of the top overall seed.

DC took an initial 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single from Kobe Davis before taking on another run in the third when Charlie Grable scored on an error.

Sabetha got one run back in the top of the fourth on a sac fly from Jonathan Renyer, but DC came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on another Sabetha error to make it a 4-1 lead.

DC would tack on two more runs in the sixth on a two-RBI single from Alex Libel and allowed one Sabetha run in the seventh before Libel shut it down.

Libel tossed all seven innings for Doniphan County allowing just one earned run on seven hits while he also was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored earning him our McDonald’s Player of the Game on KNZA.

Charlie Grable was also on base four times for DC while Kobe Davis added two hits.

Sabetha got a solid pitching performance from Christian McAfee who allowed just one earned run through four innings of work with the defense committing five errors.

Doniphan County moves on to the winner’s bracket final Wednesday at 8 p.m. against Marysville while Sabetha will face Hiawatha Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in the loser’s bracket.
