Sabetha bounced back from a tight week one loss and celebrated homecoming night with a 39-6 victory against Riverside. The Bluejays scored a pair of touchdowns on their first four plays of the night to take a 14-0 lead in the first two and half minutes of the contest and never really looked back racking up 395 rushing yards. Sabetha had a trio of rushing touchdowns of more than 55 yards and held the Cyclones to just 28 yards on 12 plays in the second half before the final possession.
Ross Duncan broke a 55-yard touchdown run on Sabetha's second offensive play, then Riverside fumbled just three plays later on their own 13-yard line. That led to a Noah Nonnast seven-yard TD run with back to back scores in less than two minutes. Riverside answered with a touchdown as Kobe Davis hit Bray Davies on a beautiful 32-yard sideline catch before Davis ran in a one-yard touchdown. The Cyclones then buckled down on defense and forced a couple punts and also interecepted a pass, but could not capatilize with points.
Trailing 14-6 just before intermission and set to get the second half kickoff, Riverside let Drew Schmelzle break free for a 57-yard touchdown run to make it a 20-6 game just second before the half. Kaden Dillon added rushing scored from 59 and 1 yard out before Kaden Edelman finished a 19-0 second half with a two-yard score.
Duncan had 107 yards on 14 carries to lead the way while Schmelzle finished with 82 yards on just three totes and was dominating on defense to earn "Player to Bank On" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company in Hiawatha. Dillon ran for 69 yards while adding a couple completed passes for 10 yards. Michael Gugelman had 37 yards rushing in the first half before leaving with an injury as the Bluejays improved to 9-0 all time againsit Riverside and 1-1 this season with another Big 7 League battle against rival Nemaha Central next Friday in Seneca.
Riverside is now 1-1 on the year as well and will look for a league win next week at Hiawatha. The Cyclones had just 69 total rushing yards led by Charlie Grable with 27 and Davis was 7-16 passing for 60 yards, but could never really hit the big play. Riverside also had three turnovers on the night.
