Area high school volleyball teams opened the 2020 Twin Valley League schedule Tuesday night in Highland as Doniphan West hosted Centralia and Wetmore and it was the Panthers who ended the night 2-0 with a pair of straight set wins.

Centralia opened the night with a two-set win over Doniphan West jumping out to a quick 6-3 lead in the first set thanks to a pair of kills from junior Avery Deters.

Doniphan West responded though and actually took a 12-10 lead, but Centralia ended the set by scoring 11 of the final 14 points to win 25-18.

The second set was essentially all Panthers from the start as Centralia jumped out to a 5-2 before leading by scores of 12-7 and 15-9. The Panthers went on to rattle off eight of the last nine points to win the set 25-13 and take the match two sets to none.

In the Panthers second match of the day against Wetmore, Centralia jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the first set behind big kills from Deters and senior Sarah Koch. The Panthers took complete control with a 4-0 run late to take the first set 25-17.

Just like Centralia’s first match of the night their match against Wetmore was all Panthers in set two as they raced out to a 6-2 lead and never looked back leading by scored of 15-6 and 19-10 before eventually winning the set 25-14 and the match.

In the final match of the night it was by far the most thrilling as Wetmore jumped out to a 16-7 lead on Doniphan West in the first set.

That lead was pushed to 19-9 before the Mustangs mounted a huge comeback, scoring seven straight points behind the serving of senior Sadie Leach and mistakes by the Cardinals.

Doniphan West was eventually able to tie the set at 23 before scoring four straight points to win set one 25-23.

The second set of the match was just like set one as Wetmore got out to an early lead at 7-6, but Doniphan West scored five straight points and 9 of 11 points to take a 15-9 lead which they would never give up winning the set 25-21 ending the match.

It was a solid way to end the night for Doniphan West who celebrated senior night honoring six seniors in Sadie Leach, Heidi Leach, Alexis Wilson, Myah Olson, Joscelyne Keller and Dana Windmeyer.

Centralia with the two victories improves to 3-2 on the season while the Mustangs start the year 1-1 and Wetmore still searches for their first victory of the season.
