Olpe 20, Jackson Heights 18

The undefeated matchup of Class 1A teams lived up to the hype on Friday night, but Jackson Heights made too many mistakes to overcome and went 0-3 on two-point-conversions before falling on homecoming to #3 ranked Olpe 20-18.  Despite having 42 more yards of offense, the Cobras failed to recover an onside kick, fumbled a punt return and gift-wrapped the Eagles first score with a snap that went over the head of their punter.

Both teams exchanged punts on their opening drive, but a bad Jackson Heights snap, gave Olpe the ball at the 20-yard-line. Five plays later the Eagles scored and they were never give up the lead while improving to 4-0 and winning the 100th game for 12th year Coach, Chris Schmidt.  The Cobras pulled within 7-6 on a Cooper Williams touchdown late in the first quarter and scored to begin the second half to make it 13-12.  Yet, Olpe answered both those scores on fourth down plays as Colby Hoelting hit Camden Hoelting for a 20-yard touchdown on fourth and nine in the second stanza and Camden ran in a score from one-yard out late in the third to make it 20-12.  Olpe was 2-3 kicking PATs with Gabe Castillo, which also proved to be the difference.

Jackson Heights scored on a wild 78-yard halfback pass with 4:41 to go in the game as Kolby Rethman under deress, desperately heaved the ball into a crowd and somehow Cooper Williams made the catch and ran away from everyone for a score.  A holding penalty negated the Cobras two-point-try to tie the score as they fell to 3-1 on the season.  Jackson Heights got the football back with just over two minutes remaining but ran four plays and failed to gain a first down.

Williams was named the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On" with 81 yards rushing on 17 carries and a score, plus two catches for 96 yards, including the 78-yard halfback reception.  Conlan Bruggeman had another standout night defensively and registered 59 yards on 17 carries while Rethman had 11 totes for 33 yards and quarterback, Cable Wareham, also ran for a five-yard touchdown in the third quarter.  Dylan Thompson broke up a key pass and intercepted another in the red zone to stop a third quarter Olpe drive after they recovered an onside kick.  Carson Williams had a great game on both sides of the ball to earn the Denison State Bank "Lineman of the Game."

Olpe had 147 yards rushing and 75 passing on 7-12 accuracy.  Kynden Robert led the way with 68 yards on nine carries while Blaine Hinrichs added 66 yards on 16 carries.  Camden Hoelting ran for a touchdown and had five receptions for 61 yards and another score for unbeaten Olpe.
