The 2018 high school baseball season saw one area team capture a State title while several others had strong seasons and nine area baseball players and one coach picked up postseason honors from the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches.
Sabetha Bluejays capped a spectacular season by capturing the Class 3A State title and finishing the season with a 23-3 record. In just the second season of varsity baseball Sabetha Head Coach, Aaron Frey guided the Bluejays to the State title and was named KABC Class 3A Coach of the Year. A trio of Bluejays all earned second team All-State honors from the KABC as seniors, Brayden Becker and Blake Frey picked up the honors at pitcher and outfield, while sophomore, Gabe Garber got the nod at outfield.
Oskaloosa and Nemaha Central each also had players earn All-State honors from the KABC in Class 3A. It was a strong 20-2 season by the Oskaloosa Bears and senior, Jared Miller and junior, Hunter Reed both were named first team All-State at catcher and shortstop, respectively, while Jerod Shufflebarger picked up honorable mention honors at pitcher. Junior, Austin Gerety of Nemaha Central picked up first team All-State honors at second base, while Thunder junior, Noe Gauna got the nod for honorable mention honors at outfield. The Thunder finished this season 15-6.
Only one other area baseball player to earn KABC All-State honors as Jeff West Tiger senior, Grant Thompson picked up honorable mention honors at pitcher in Class 4A-DII. The Tigers posted a 16-4 record on the season and won the Big Seven League title.
The KABC has also announced the rosters for its annual All-Star game which will take place on June 6 at Hoglund Stadium in Lawrence. One area athlete is set to compete in the All-Star as Oskaloosa senior, Jared Miller has been selected to compete and will be part of the Red team.
