Several Area Schools Have Top 20 Finishers at Sabetha Cross Country Invite as Pair of Hiawatha Runners Win

A rainy Thursday didn't ultimately deter area cross country runners as they still hit the course for competition in Sabetha as the Bluejays hosted an Invitational. 

Plenty of area teams were in action and it was the Hiawatha Red Hawks and Sabetha Bluejays notching the best area team performances. In the girls competition Baldwin took the team title, while Hiawatha finished in second place and Sabetha earned third. The rest of the girls team finishes had Wamego take fourth, St. Mary's place fifth, Jackson Heights sixth, Jeff West seventh, ACCHS eighth and Royal Valley ninth. Baldwin also won the boys race with Wamego taking second place. The top boys area team performance was Hiawatha who finished third, while Sabetha took fourth place. The rest of the boys team finishes had St. Mary's in fifth, Marysville sixth, Jackson Heights seventh, St. Mary's Academy eighth, Royal Valley ninth, Nemaha Central tenth, Holton 11th, Horton 12th and Jeff West 13th. 

A pair of Hiawatha Red Hawk runners continued their strong seasons by winning another competition as both Elizabeth Kettler and Justin Hodge won the girls and boys races. Kettler posted a time of 20:41.65 to win by around 25 seconds, while Hodge notched a time of 17:20 to take first by 27 seconds. Kate Madsen, Mary Rosa and Jasmine Morey also finished in the Top 20 for the Hiawatha girls placing eighth (22:05.65), 14th and 20th, respectively. 

The host Sabetha Bluejays were led in the girls race by Hattie Luckert who raced to a time of 21:47.82 to take fourth, while Megan Meyer with a time of 22:08 placed ninth. In the boys race Henry Glynn posted a time of 18:28 to take eighth place and his teammate Kaden Dillon finished 17th. 

Macy Tucker of Jeff West raced to a seventh place finish in the girls competition behind a time of 21:58.64, while Makenzie Tucker placed 15th on the day. 

A pair of Jackson Heights lady Cobras finished tenth and 11th on the day as Faith Little earned tenth (22:11) and Shelby Phillips took 11th place. 

Riverside, Wetmore, Royal Valley, Marysville and Horton all had one Top 20 finisher on the day. The Cyclones were led by Matthew Kline who with a time of 18:27 earned seventh place. 

For the Cardinals Alena Pfrang placed 16th in the girls race, while Royal Valley was led by Garrett Hicks who placed 13th in the boys competition. Davis Lee of Marysville earned 14th place in the boys action and Skye Joe Coversup of Horton finished 15th.
