For the third time this season the Highland Community College Scotties hit the road for a battle on the gridiron this time traveling to Hutchinson for a battle against the Blue Dragons and a battle it was going to double overtime with Hutchinson just edging Highland 13-10.

Both teams struggled early offensively and each were looking for a break and the Scotties caught a break getting setup in Hutchinson territory after Darius Johnson's third interception of the season. The field position also set up the first scoring opportunity of the game and the Scotties attempted a 47-yard field goal by William Solomon but it came up a bit short bouncing off the crossbar and the game remained scoreless. Hutchinson looked to answer mounting the first substantial offensive drive of the game getting close to the redzone but went backwards and went for a fourth and 12 on the Highland 26-yard line and the Scottie defense came up with one of many stops they would have on the day.

The rest of the first half saw Highland struggle to move the ball finishing with roughly 50 yards of offense in the first half but Hutchinson found some success with passes across the middle and a few drives led to some scoring opportunities for Hutchinson for intermission as the got into the redzone twice but missed a 43 and 38-yard field goal try and the game remained scoreless at halftime.

Highland's offensive woes continued in the second half and the struggles led to some Scottie turnovers as a Kyle Kearns fumble was picked up by Hutchinson leading to their third field goal attempt of the day. Luke Niemeyer who missed twice already tired a 37-yard attempt this time and misfired again. Hutchinson started to mount another drive late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter set up to attempt their fourth field goal of the day and the close of the four but the 23-yard attempt was blocked by Loren Young and recovered by Dominique Williams for the Scotties.

Scotties trying to find something on offense went to Tristan Speer and Xavier Shepard Jr at quarterback in the fourth quarter. Shepard went down with an injury and Speer after that injury came in tossing an interception which setup the fifth opportunity at a field goal for the Blue Dragons of Hutchinson. This time Niemeyer split the uprights hitting the 33-yard field goal to give Hutchinson the 3-0 lead with 11:11 left in the contest.

With 2:12 remaining Highland got the ball back down 3-0 and started to mount a drive with the run and short passes as Speer guided the Scottie offense down the field. A big personal foul penalty helped Highland move the ball down the field and then on third and 11 from the Hutchinson 16 Willie Jordan ran for 12 yards and set up first and goal for Highland. Scotties lost four yards on the next play and then a pair of incompletions set up a 25-yard game tying field for Solomon who hit it to send the game to overtime.

In overtime Highland got the ball first and the Scotties had Speer hit Ronnie Jamison in the back of the endzone for the touchdown but Hutchinson matched that output on two plays and it was tied 10-10 and the contest went to second overtime. Blue Dragons were held to a field goal try in second overtime but Niemeyer made a 37-yarder and the Scotties where then held a field goal try too but a 39-yard attempt fell short and Hutchinson took the game 13-10 over Highland.

Scotties defense was strong on the day giving up only 244 total yards, 38 yards rushing and forced two turnovers and forcing multiple field goal tries by Hutchinson in the contest. Tra Barrett had 11 tackles on the day, while Jeremiah Hill added 10. Jahkeem Green recorded nine tackles and a sack, while Kendrick Catis and Loren Young each had eight tackles and Young added a half sack. The Highland offense managed only 141 yards total offense with 62 coming on the final drive of regulation. Speer finished 8-14 for 53 yards with a touchdown and interception, while Kearns was 7-18 for 43 yards. Albert Howard caught five passes for 41 yards, while the Scottie ran for just 45 yards.

The loss sends Highland to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in KJCCC play. The Scotties head into a bye week and will be next in action at home against Butler on Saturday, October 7th at 1:00pm (homecoming - game will be broadcasted on Scottie Sports Network).
