Marysville Softball Tops Perry Lecompton For Third Place In 3A State Tournament

A pair of Northeast Kansas area teams headed to Manhattan for the Class 3A State softball tournament and put together strong showings. Marysville and Perry Lecompton finished third and fourth at State after winning their first round games then falling in the Semifinals before facing each other for third where Marysville earned the win. 

Marysville opened the State tournament with a 9-3 win over Cheney entering State as the sixth seed and beating a team with only one loss in the first round. The Bulldog got on the board with two runs in the top of the first but Cheney answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to lead 3-2. The Bulldogs did the rest of the scoring for the game with two runs in the third and sixth innings and three in the fourth to gain the 9-3 win. Sydney Pacha, Sarah Roberts and Holly Holthaus each had two hits for Marysville, while Kali Crome blasted a home run. Shelby Downard earned the win in the circle going seven innings giving up three runs on two hits and three walks and struck out nine. 

For Perry Lecompton State opened up with as the five seed against the four seed Southeast of Saline and the Kaws fell down early 1-0 after the first inning but responded quickly. In the top of the second inning Perry Leompton scored three runs and used that output to push themselves to the win. The Kaws out-hit Southeast of Saline 14-5 and were led offensively by Harleigh Robertson who had four hits, while Megan Fast pitched seven innings giving up just one run in the circle helping Perry Lecompton win 3-1 in the first round of State. 

In the Semifinals Marysville suffered a 6-3 loss to Rossville, while Perry Lecompton fell 4-1 to Riverton. Marysville down 1-0 took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth but Rossville responded with a five-run bottom of the fifth and used that to earn the win. Downard and Pacha each had a two-hit game for Marysville in the loss. Perry Lecompton kept it tied 1-1 against Riverton until the bottom of the sixth when Riverton scored three runs to and used that to snag the 4-1 win. Fast pitched strong again recording five strikeouts but gave up four runs on eight hits, while also recording the Kaws RBI in the loss. 

With the losses in the Semifinals Marysville and Perry Lecompton hit the field against each other vying for third place in Class 3A and the Bulldogs edged the Kaws 3-1 in the contest. Bulldogs got their three runs in the top of the second and while the Kaws got a run in the third and out-hit Marysville 8-3 it was the Bulldogs earning the 3-1 win. Downard pitched Marysville to the win giving up just one run on eight hits in seven innings, while Fast in the loss recorded 10 strikeouts in the circle for Perry Lecompton giving up three runs on three hits. 

The third place finish at State was the best for Marysville since 2013 when the team took third that year and the Bulldogs capped the 2017 with a 20-5 record. While Perry Lecompton who made their first State trip since 2008 capped their best season in school history with a 22-4 record and fourth place finish at State.
