It was a rematch of last season's 8-Man Division II state title game between the B&B Falcons and the Thunder Ridge Longhorns, while revenge was in the back of the minds of the Falcons it was just focus on ending the season on top that was the main driving force propelling them to a 28-6 win and a state title and perfect 13-0 record behind the coaching of Justin Coup.
Falcons soared to a tremendous start to the game as they won the tossed and deferred to the second half, starting the game on defense. B&B Falcons defense has they have done all season came up big forcing a three-and-out by the Longhorns and that gave the Falcons a short field after the punt. Junior quarterback, Dustin Rottinghaus and his band of Falcons on offense took advantage of the short field marching down the field and punching it into the endzone with a one yard TD run by senior fullback, Dustin Deters.
Defense for the Falcons now working with a lead forced another three-and-out by Thunder Ridge, that resulted in an even shorter field for the B&B offense. This time the Falcons moved down the field again and junior tailback, Brandon Bergman hit paydirt from six yards out. After successful two-point conversions both times the Falcons had a 16-0 lead quickly in the game just early on in the first quarter.
The Falcons defense would come up again with another three-and-out against the Longhorns on the next series and would continue to dominate the remainder of the day. B&B defense saw impact plays from everyone on throughout the game as Blake Reinecke and Curtis Stallbaumer combined for a sack and pressure all game, Dustin Rottinghaus picked off the Longhorns quarterback and made multiple other plays in the defensive backfield, while guys like Dustin Deters, Tyler Deters, Cole Deters, Derek Mueting, Dave Macke and others made big tackles and plays all day.
Falcons defense held Thunder Ridge to total of 194 yards in the game including holding their backfield tandem of senior fullback, Trevor Lowe and sophomore tailback, Trent Rietzke to 84 combined rushing yards. Longhorns managed to get close to the 15 yard line of the Falcons a couple of times, once after a B&B fumble on special teams but the stout Falcon defense held and forced turnover of downs most every time outside of once when the ball caromed off a Falcon defender into the hands of Trevor Lowe on a pass by Longhorn quarterback, Garrett Krueger, resulting Thunder Ridge's only points.
While the defense's performances lead the way for the Falcons on the day the offense continued to do what it was all season for B&B and be effective and balanced. Quarterback, Rottinghaus after handing off the ball to Dustin Deters and Bergman early for TD runs, he tossed an 11 yard score to Tyler Deters and ran in from one yard out for another TD. Rottinghaus finished the game with 110 yards passing on 12-23 passing and 90 yards rushing with TD on the ground and passing. Dustin Deters added 73 yards rushing with TD, while Bergman had his TD on the ground, too. Tyler Deters receiving capped his night with 62 yards on six receptions and TD catch.
The Falcons continue to be a powerhouse school in athletics in the state of Kansas winning state titles in multiple sports and football has done it for years. Over the last five years the Falcons have amassed a record of 63-3, made five straight state title games and won three state titles. B&B caps off their season a perfect 13-0 and state champs etching themselves into the history books.
