Highland Football Team Gets Big Win Over #9 Team in Country

Back in the NJCAA Top 25 this week ranked #19 the Highland Scotties played host to the #9 ranked Coffeyville Red Ravens and picked up the 48-10 win at home.

Coffeyville started the game strong with an eight-play drive covering 68 yards and getting a rushing touchdown to take the initial 7-0 lead but Highland on their first offensive drive responded with a 10-play drive covering 72 yards finishing with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Kahlil Render to Demarre Kitt but a missed PAT kept the lead in Coffeyville’s favor 7-6 with 8:22 left in the first quarter. Scotties took the lead in with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Render to Kitt and with a two-point conversion made it 14-7. With 5:37 left in the first half Coffeyville made it a 14-10 contest with a field goal but Highland did the rest of the scoring in the half and the game. Before halftime Highland scored twice and led 28-10 at intermission, then controlled the second half scoring 14 points in the third and six more in the fourth to win 48-10.

Render finished the contest 12-22 for 205 yards with four touchdowns and ran for a touchdown, while Kitt caught two of the four touchdowns on five catches for 106 yards and Bailen Brumfield caught the other two touchdowns on four receptions for 77 yards. Marquis Terry led the Scotties on the ground with 27 carries for 113 yards, while Ra’Quanne Dickens ran for 102 yards and touchdown on 17 carries.

The win pushes Highland to 7-3 on the season and 5-0 at home. The Scotties wrap up the regular season next Saturday, November 12th at 1:00pm at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa.

Highland Women's Basketball Wins Close Game to Move to 3-0

The #2 ranked Highland women continue the basketball season on the road playing Redlands Community College at Allen County on Saturday and needed a strong second half to comeback to secure the win. 

Down 41-29 at halftime the lady Scotties put together a 43-21 second half to come from behind and earn the 72-62 win over Redlands. The Scotties finished the game shooting 45.1% from the floor (23-51) and went 18-22 from the free throw line (81.8%). Jameka Dowell paced the team with 24 points going 14-16 from the charity stripe in the contest, while both Shaiann Tramble and Szonja Vokov each chipped in 12 points and eight and seven rebounds, respectively. 

The win moves Highland to 3-0 on the season and they are back in action on Monday night traveling to William Penn to play their JV team for the second time this season. 

Highland Men's Basketball Picks Up Frist Win Of the Year

After a tough season opening loss on the road to Barton the Highland men’s basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday taking down the Washburn junior varsity 80-66.

The Scotties built an eight-point lead by intermission up 35-27 and added to that in the second half to secure the win shooting 45.5% from the floor and 40% from three-point range as a team. A quartet of players tallied double figures for Highland as Dontre English posted 15 points, while, Ryan Hopkins chipped in 14, Jaquan Daniels added 13 points and Stephon Jackson contributed 11 points. Troy native, Collin Jasper hit a pair of three’s to score six points for the Scotties in the win.

Washburn junior varsity features several players from Northeast Kansas as former Jeff West Tiger, Jacob Dickey scored three points in the game, along with former Doniphan West Mustang, Cooper Leach who had three assists and two rebounds, while former Sabetha Bluejay, Brock Frey hit a three-pointer for three points. Former Royal Valley Panther, Skyler Link tallied a six point and four rebound night for Washburn.

The win moves Highland to 1-1 on the season and the Scotties will hit the court again on Friday, November 11th at KCKCC against Livin’ the Dream at 4:00pm and then play Saturday against Link Year Prep at 2:00pm.

Highland Volleyball Team Wraps Up Season at Districts

The Highland lady Scotties wrapped up the 2016 volleyball season in the District Tournament at Coffeyville as they fell to Fort Scott in the opening round in three-straight sets.

The Scotties pushed Fort Scott to the wire in each set but fell 20-25, 22-25, 23-25. Former ACCHS Tiger, Shailey Caudle led Highland with 13 kills and registered six digs, while Tyrecia Lukes tallied 12 digs. Holton native, Megan Rhule recorded 35 assists with six digs in the contest, while Marianna Falls notched 11 digs. 

The three set loss ends the season for Highland with a 24-14 record. It marks the second-straight year with a winning record and the best Scotties volleyball record since 2011.
