Northeast Kansas Area Senior Athletes Compete at HCC All-Star Games (Recap & Radio Interviews)

Over 50 top senior area athletes came together for the annual Northeast Kansas All-Star games at Highland Community College with volleyball, girls and boys basketball competitions.

The action got rolling with the 14th edition of the Northeast Kansas All-Star volleyball game and it was the Gold team coming out on top of the Navy team winning all three sets played. A 3-0 start to set one got the Gold team rolling but the Navy team hung tough and at 12-12 the match was tied up. Navy shortly after that took their first lead of the day at 15-14 and the team’s trade points until a late 6-0 run by Gold that ultimately led them to the 25-19 set one win. Set two was even tighter between the two teams and the Navy squad lead by as many as four points in the set but at the set was pushed to a tie at 18-18 and after trading points the Gold team came back to take the set and match winning set two 25-23. The two teams played one more set and in the third set the Gold team took early control and topped Navy 15-10 in set three.

Valley Falls Dragon, Sydney Gish helped lead the Gold team with multiple kills in the contest getting rolling early, while Leavenworth product, Jordan Counts also posted multiple kills and Maur Hill-Mount Academy Raven, Avery Lewman was all over the floor making plays. While, Chelsey Trautloff (Horton), Callie Watson (Valley Falls), Amanda Wistuba (Jefferson County North) and Carly Taylor (Maur Hill) all were part of the Gold team led by Kim Taylor and David Schuler the head coaches of Maur Hill and JCN.

For the Navy team in the loss both Anna Anderson-Johnson and Haley Thompson of Royal Valley and Holton helped lead Navy each registering multiple kills. While, Megan Rhule (Holton), Holly Whetstine (Troy), Kenzie Blevins (Doniphan West), Mallory Eckert (ACCHS), Aubree Robinson (Doniphan West) and Kylie Farris (Lansing).

The girls basketball game early looked like it was going to be one-sided as the Navy team blasted out to a 13-0 lead over the Gold team, but Gold battled back and trailed only 18-12 after the first quarter. Then a 24-15 second quarter gave the Gold team a 36-33 lead at halftime. That lead continued to be held by the Gold team but Navy keep pushing and with a 24-12 fourth quarter the Navy closed the game strong like they started the competition to earn the 78-68 win.

Leading the way for the Navy team was prolific scorer Valley Heights Mustang, Brandi Jo Roepke who posted a game-high 21 points, while Hiawatha Red Hawk Emily Gartner and Holton Wildcat, Hayley Thompson each notched double figures, too with 14 and 10 points, respectively. (Rest of Navy scoring – Ida Pieschl (Topeka) 9pts, Courtney Heinen (Axtell) 8pts, Kiersten Talbot (Axtell) 8pts, Kyla Hardwick (Frankfort) 2pts, Avery Lewman (Maur Hill) 2pts, Crystal Barbary (Hiawatha) 2pts, Kenzie Blevins (Doniphan West) 1pt, Paige Doebele (Hanover) 1pt – also played Mallory Eckert (ACCHS), Gerae Haverkamp (Wetmore) and Madi Marriott (Troy)) Brady Jasper of Hiawatha led the Navy team as their head coach.

The Gold team had a pair of gals in double figures, while every player on the team that played in the game scored at least two points. The Big Seven League led the Gold team as Sabetha Bluejay, Alexis McAfee and Nemaha Central Thunder, Rachael Baumgartner each posted double figures scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively. (Rest of the Gold scoring – Claire Cudney (Marysville) 8pts, Ali Brown (Valley Falls) 6pts, Taryn Schuette (Sabetha) 5pts, Chelsey Trautloff (Horton) 5pts, Taylor Feldkamp (Axtell) 4pts, Mariah Huneke (4pts), Chelsea Huerter (Centralia) 3pts, Jenna Kramer (Valley Falls) 3pts, Sasha Perry (Riverside) 3pts, Katelin Strube (Jackson Heights) 2pts and Skylar Young (Leavenworth) 2pts – also on team Callie Watson (Valley Falls) but didn’t play because of injury in volleyball game) Todd Gish of Valley Falls led the Gold team as their head coach.

The Navy team would sweep the basketball action on the day taking the boys basketball game too leading most of the game on their way to the 113-104 win. Navy established a comfortable lead in the first half leading 33-17 at one point but the Gold team got the game to single digits by halftime trailing only 53-45. The second half proved to be much of the same as the first as Navy held Gold at bay and pushed the lead back out late to secure the win in a game which featured 10 guys scoring double figures between the two teams.

Sabetha Bluejay, Calder Keehn paced the Navy team in the win pouring in 20 points in the All-Star contest, while Marysville’s, Chase Green hit four three’s on his way to 16 points and a trio of guys in Jagar Haack (Pleasant Ridge), Michael Payton (Leavenworth) and Brock Frey (Sabetha) each tallied 14 points. (Rest of Navy scoring – Anthony Edwards (Valley Heights) 8pts, Trey Craig (Wetmore) 8pts, Alec Cowley (Horton) 5pts, Blake Hallacy (Silver Lake) 4pts, Kyle McGatlin (Washington County) 4pts, Chord Livingston (Jeff West) 4pts, Austin Taylor (Doniphan West) 2pts – also played Ethan Pierce (Hiawatha)) Scott Burger of Sabetha led the Navy team as their head coach.

A game-high 22 points by Wykeen Gill Jr. of Atchison led the Gold team, while Luke Holthaus of Nemaha Central finished with 16 points. Bryce Noll of JCN, Colton Buessing of Axtell and Cooper Leach of Doniphan West all got to the double figure mark also for Gold scoring 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Top senior area athletes got to showcase their talents one final time and compete against some of the area’s best in the 30th annual Northeast Kansas All-Star basketball games and 14th annual volleyball competition.
