Atchison & Hiawatha Lead Area Performances at Holton Track Invite

The track season is under way and Holton hosted a few other area teams along with one other team for action on Tuesday. 

For the girls action it was Atchison with 189.50 behind six event wins that took home the top team spot out of the six schools competing on the day. Abilene registered second place with 126 points, while Hiawatha took third with 103 points. Holton, Jackson Heights and Valley Falls finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively finishing out the team performances. 

On the boys side Abilene won 14 of the 18 events and dominated the competition posting 243 total points to win the team crown at the Holton Invite by over 100 points. Atchison took second as a team with 133 total points, while the host Holton registered third. Jackson Heights, Hiawatha and Valley Falls finished fourth, fifth and sixth as teams, respectively. 

Six first place finishes led the lady Red of Atchison to a team title on the day at the Holton Invite and Talia Rawls had a hand in four of the six gold medals. Rawls behind times of 12.36 and 1:06.50 won both the 100 and 400 meter dashes, while joining with three other gals to help Atchison win the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. Rawls partnered with Jaihlyn Bratton, Kadejah Ross and Hannah Turner to notch a time of 54.38 to win the 4x100 meter relay, while Rawls and Bratton then teamed with Arhianna Franklin and Kathryn McCoole to register a time of 4:31.82 to win the gold in the 4x400 meter relay. Both Turner and McCoole also won other events on the day as Turner sprinted her way to the gold in the 200 meter dash (29.17) and McCoole leapt her to the win in the triple jump (31'03). 

One Atchison Redmen boy’s athlete took home first place as Matthew Sowers won the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:11.65. 

Hiawatha Red Hawks had six first place finishes overall on the day with five coming in the girl’s competition. Emily Gartner started her track season strong winning both the shot put (35'09.50) and discus (119'03) crowns. Gartner won the discus by nearly 25 feet and won the shot put by over a foot. Elizabeth Kettler paced her way to the best time in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:09.02 to win the gold by over 30 seconds, while also partnering up with Molly Kettler, Kailey Davis and Emma Williams to win the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 10:41.96 giving the Red Hawks the win by nearly 20 seconds. Cariann Kunkel also brought home the gold with a toss of 107'00 to claim the javelin title. 

Gavin Lierz notched the lone Hiawatha boys first place finish as he won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42.93. 

The host Holton Wildcats had four first place performances on the day with two each coming in the girls and boys competition. Both Hollly Karn and Courtney Boswell grabbed golds in the girl’s action winning the 100 meter hurdles (16.31) and 300 meter hurdles (53.37), respectively. While in the boys competition Will Wright and Mason Strader each won an event. Wright posted a time of 52.75 to win the 400 meter dash, while Starder won the 1600 meter run behind a time of 4:52.00, winning by over 10 seconds. 

Faith Little of Jackson Heights started her track season in a strong way as she laid claim to the gold in the 800 and 1600 meter runs with time of 2:25.75 and 5:28.00, respectively; winning the 800 by a little over 10 seconds.
