Several Area Schools Compete at Jayhusker Wrestling Invitational at Marysville

Seven area teams from Kansas and Nebraska hit the mats as part of the Jayhusker Invitational in Marysville on Saturday, while seven other teams competed, also.

The best area team performance came from the host of the tournament as the Marysville Bulldogs posted 137 points to place second at their tournament finishing behind Salina Central who tallied 159 points to take the tournament title. Three non-area teams rounded out the Top five as Shawnee Heights, Silver Lake and Washburn Rural placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively. The rest of the team performances shook out with Beatrice sixth, Beloit seventh, Doniphan West eighth, Republic County ninth, Sabetha 10th, Falls City and Johnson County Central tied for 11th, Hiawatha placed 13th and Maur Hill-Mount Academy placed 14th.

Marysville on their way to a second place team finish had six Top four finishers on the day, led by an individual title by Chris Deters (126lbs) who posted a 3-0 record. Deters started the day with a bye and in the second round earned a pinfall win in 1:09, moving to the Semifinals were he registered another win by pinfall (3:23). In the Championship bout, Deters picked up the win by a 6-3 decision to claim the title. Two Bulldogs earned silver medals on the day as Skylar Widmer (132lbs) and Jacob Mintzmyer (152lbs) both earned second place going 2-1 and 1-1, respectively. Behind a 4-1 record on the day Jacob Stryker (145lbs) earned a third place finish, while Caleb Vogelsberg (195lbs) and Scott Kleinert (285lbs) both also earned third for the Bulldogs both going 3-1.

The Doniphan West Mustangs were led by three Top three finishes on the day as Tristan Speer (Troy), Garrett Dunlap and Kody Collins all continued their strong seasons on the mats. Speer (195lbs) continued to dominate the competition going 3-0 with a pinfall win in the opening round (1:11), followed by another pinfall win (1:11) in the Semifinals and in the Championship bout posted a 6-3 decision for the win. Dunlap (160lbs) took home second place going 3-1 on the day with a technical fall (15-0) win to start the day, followed by two pinfall wins (1:38, 4:47), but fell by a 7-2 decision in the Championship bout. For Collins (182lbs) it was a third place medal earned after going 2-1 with a pair of pinfall wins (2:04, 2:18).

A third and fourth place finish highlighted the day for the Sabetha Bluejays as Brandon Poe (170lbs) posted a 3-1 record to take third, while Seth Harrell (113lbs) earned a fourth place finish after going 1-2. Poe picked up a pair of pinfall wins on the day (2:04 and 4:04), while also winning via a 9-3 decision, while Harrell's lone win came by pinfall (1:29).

Falls City Tiger heavyweight, Jeremy Zimmerman highlighted the day for the Tigers wrestling his way to a first place finish, going 3-0. Zimmerman opened the action with a first round bye and in the second round earned the pinfall win (1:46) to make the Semifinals. In the Semifinals it was another pinfall win for Jeremy this time in 5:54, moving him into the Championship bout were he picked up the 4-2 decision win.

Johnson County Central grappler, Sam Saldivar registered a Top four finish picking third place aat 106lbs after posting a 3-1 record with two pinfall wins on the day.

The Hiawatha Red Hawks, also had one Top four finisher as Keenan Hinton (220lbs) notched a second place finish after going 2-1 with a pair of pinfall wins (2:55 and 4:32).
