Marysville & Holton Take Third & Fourth at Clay Center Wrestling Invitational

The Holton Wildcats and the Marysville Bulldogs hit the mats at the Clay Center Invitational on Saturday and both came away with top flight performances in competition with 10 other schools.

Marysville finished with 145 total points to claim third place, while Holton tallied 133.5 points to claim fourth as a team. Garden Center and Norton finished ahead of them in first and second respectively totaling 237 and 172.5 points.

The Marysville Bulldogs were led on the day by Chris Deters who took home first place at 126lbs wrestling to a 4-0 day, picking up the 8-4 decision win in the championship and in pool play had two pinfall wins and a 5-4 decision win. Josh Nelsen also earned first place individually going 5-0 at 170lbs, winning a tight bout in the championship match, getting the 4-2 decision. Nelsen in pool play notched three pinfall wins and a 5-1 decision victory.

Caleb Vogelsburg brought home a second place finish for Marysville at 195lbs with a 4-1 record, earning three pinfall wins and a 7-4 decision, while Scott Kleinert (275lbs) and Jacob Mintzmeyer (152lbs) both earned third place finishes. Kleinert went 3-1 winning the third place bout with a pinfall 2:59, while also earning two more pinfall wins in pool play; for Mintzmeyer he went 4-1 with three pinfall wins on the day.

Six other Bulldogs earned Top eight finishes at the Clay Center Invitational, as Nick Ackerman (182lbs) placed fourth, Skylar Widmer (138lbs) earned fifth place, Chance Hight (106lbs) nabbed a sixth place finish, Jaocb Stryker (145lbs) placed seventh, while Mitchell Schoenberger (132lbs) and David Heck (160lbs) each placed eighth.

For the Holton Wildcats, one individual champion, three second place finishes, two thirds and a sixth place highlighted the day. Lucas Lovvorn led the charge for Holton on the mats going 5-0 and winning at 160lbs, claiming the title with a 11-3 major decision win in the championship bout. In pool play action Lovvorn picked up two pinfall wins, a technical fall 5:43 victory and a 2-0 decision win.

Tyler Price (138lbs), Justin Rieschick (145lbs) and Mason Baum (170lbs) all three earned second place finishes. Price notched a 3-1 record, falling by major decision 16-4 in the championship bout, but picked up wins via a 16-6 major decision and two pins in pool play. For Rieschick and Baum they both finished 4-1 on the day falling in their championship bouts by 10-2 major decision and 4-2 decision, respectively. Rieschick did win by 9-3 and 7-1 decision in pool play, along with a pin and 15-2 major decision. While, Baum had three pinfall wins and a 7-2 decision.

Justin Pool (132lbs) and Nathan Shields (220lbs) both nabbed third place finishes finishing with 4-1 and 2-2 records, respectively. While, Kegan Meister also competed for Holton and finished sixth for the Wildcats at 275lbs.

Holton next hits the mat on Thursday when they host Sabetha in a Big Seven League showdown.
