Big Seven & Northeast Kansas League's Highlight Jeff West Track Invite

The Big Seven League and Northeast Kansas league highlight the Jeff West track and field Invitational on Tuesday with top notch performances from teams from each league.

Hiawatha and Sabetha boys and girls had the top team performances, while ACCHS, Holton and Jeff West all from the Big Seven League also competed in action. Out of the Northeast Kansas league Valley Falls, Jefferson County North, Jackson Heights and Oskaloosa all had competitors at the meet, while Rock Creek also competed, too.

The Hiawatha Redhawks at the end of the day came away with the most events wins and gold medals claiming 14 first place finishes between the girls and boys competitions, with multiple multi-event winners. On the girls side Jordan Puvogel and Brianna Schmitz each won two individual races on the day. Puvogel claimed the 1600 and 3200 meter run titles with times of 5:35.86 and 12:10.55, while Schmitz sprinted her way to wins in the 200 and 400 meter dashes posting times of 26.65 and 1:02.01. Both gals also competed in the one or both the lady Red Hawk relay teams that won the 4x400 (4:20.87) and the 4x800 (10:04.59). The 4x800 girls squad broke the school record for the Red Hawks. Emily Gartner added another first place for the lady Red Hawks as she won the discus with a toss of 132'07.

On the boys side for competition for Hiawatha Conner Bigham speared headed the performances as he won both the 800 meter run (2:06.35) and the high jump (6'02). While just like the girls the Red Hawk relay teams also had another strong day winning the 4x400 (3:39.38) and the 4x800 (8:46.64), also. Brandt Houk, Bryce Oldridge and Quentin Overdick each posted a first place showing for Hiawatha at the Jeff West Invite. Houk paced his way to the win in the 3200 meter run posting a time of 10:37.13, while Oldridge tossed his way to a win in the shot put (43'05.50) and Overdick won the discus throw (150'01).

The Holton Wildcats actually ended the day with the second most first place showings in all the events with seven by the boys and girls combined. Five came on the boy’s side of competition and all five of those came on the track. Brendan Hampton raced to a win in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.77, while Dakota Colhouer claimed the 400 meter dash posting a time of 53.00 and Drake Ewing won the 100 meter dash posting a time of 10.89, breaking a 13-year-old school record. The Wildcats 4x100 meter relay team earned gold with a time of 44.98 and Dalton Colhouer grabbed first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:48.21. On the girl’s side Krystie Miller and Alex Meyers each won events for the Wildcats. Miller claimed first in the shot put (35'03) and Meyers won the 300 meter hurdles (51.67).

Both Sabetha and Jefferson County North had four place finishers on the day at the Jeff West Invite.

Bluejays were led by three first place showings on the girls side of competition as the 4x100 meter relay team claimed first with a time of 53.17, Heidi Heiniger won the javelin with a toss of 119'11 and Meagan Garrett won the high jump with a leap of 5'02. On the boys side Ben Meyer claimed the only Bluejays first place winning the pole vault (10'06).

Jeff County North also had three of their four first place finishes come in the girls competitions as the Chargers earned wins in the sprint medley, pole vault and pentathlon. Chargers relay team posted a time of 4:42.13 to win the sprint medley relay, while Laramie Leakey claimed the pole vault title with a vault of 9'0 and Hannah Twenhafel won the pentathlon. Luke Pyle won the other event for the Chargers as he tossed his way to a win in the javelin (164'04).

Valley Falls Dragons earned three first place finishes on the day with the Dragon boys winning the sprint medley relay posting a time of 3:57.18, Max Badgett winning the long jump (20'00) and Emily Nottingham winning the 100 meter dash (13.00).

ACCHS, Jackson Heights and Jeff West each had one competitor earn a first place finish on the day. For ACCHS it was Madison Bissell claiming first place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:27.29. Kyle Alhgren earned a first place for Jackson Heights by winning the boys pentathlon, while Matt Coates of Jeff West won the 200 meter dash (23.71).
