Sabetha & Atchison Tennis Competes at Wamego Invite with Sabetha Winning the Competition

It was a hot start to the season for area girls tennis teams battling the heat at the Wamego Invitational, Wednesday (August 29th). For the Sabetha lady Bluejays they battled the heat and came out on top in the five team invitational and came out as the top team with 29 points from the action and going 12-4 overall on the day. For the lone other area team, Atchison they went 3-13 on the day in competition

All the Bluejays performed well in the competitions with two groups of singles competitions and a pair of doubles competitions. The best performance came at the hands of Bluejays doubles team Jordyn Wells and Courtney Plattner who went a perfect 4-0 in the doubles #2 competition and took home a first place finish. The senior tandem of Amy Wysong and Ellie Montgomery who placed sixth at State last year, competed in the doubles #1 competition and came away with a 3-1 record on the day placing second in the competition, losing only to doubles squad from Topeka High.

In the singles competiton, Lexi Wenger lead the way for the lady Bluejays with a second place finish in the singles #2 competition going 3-1 in here places, while Alexa Menold tied for second with a 2-2 record in the the singles #1 competition she fell to fourth overall in points.

Sabetha coach, Alicia Deters said "Excellent meet to start the season. The heat played a part yesterday. My girls overcame the heat and pulled out some wins. Very proud of how the girls started the season!" 

Atchison was lead by Morgan O'Niones on the day who went 2-2 and tied for second place in the #1 singles competition. Arika Smith competed in the singles #2 competition going 1-3 in action. It was a though day for the Redmen doubles teams as Haven Fry and Celina Binkley and Maddy Gonzalez and MaKayla Ernzen both went 0-4 in action.

Sabetha continues their tennis season on September 5th in the Hayden Invitational in Topeka and Atchison continues their season in also in Topeka at another Hayden Invitational on September 10th.
