The Axtell boys track and field team added another banner on Saturday as they won the Class 1A State Championship in Wichita finishing one point ahead of Quinter.
Grady Buessing was key for the Eagles winning two gold medals in the 800 and 1600 meter runs. Grady, Isaac Detweiler, Evan Buessing and Daltyn Heinen made up the 4x800 meter relay team that also took home a gold medal.
Landon Schmitz added fourth place finishes in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Sawyer Deters placed fifth in the discus and Gavin Shaughnessy finished in sixth place in the 1600-meter run.
Brandon Schmelzle placed fifth in the 100-meter dash, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump.
These boys are part of arguably one of the best years in Axtell history. They won their second consecutive 8-Man Division-II football championship in the fall and added a fourth-place finish at the 1A-II state basketball tournament in March.
Only 44 students represent the student body at Axtell, which makes the success that much greater.
