Back at state for the first time since the 2016 season the Sabetha Lady Jays rolled all the way to a runner-up finish in Class 3A falling to unbeaten Cheney in the title game on Saturday afternoon.
As if avenging their only two losses of the regular season wasn't enough in Sub State by beating ranked teams Royal Valley in overtime and Nemaha Central in double-overtime, it was a quick turn-around and wild week for the Lady Jays who got back-to-back huge performances from the duo of Melinna Schumann and Leah Renyer.
Renyer had a huge week overall, scoring 19 points in Sabetha’s opening round win over Silver Lake before scoring 21 in the semifinal win over Hugoton including the final five points of the game and the game-winner as time expired.
She followed that up with 24 points in the state title game and finished with an average of 21 points in the Lady Jays three state tournament matchups and hitting four 3-pointers on the tournament after hitting just two the entire regular season.
As to Schumann she shined inside the Hutchinson Sports Arena scoring 20 points on four 3-pointers in the semifinals before drilling four more triples in the title game on her way to scoring 18 points.
On season both Renyer and Schumann averaged in double-figures and both nearly 14 points per game while each pulled down over seven rebounds a night to lead their team and also paced Sabetha in both steal and assists categories for the year.
Despite falling short to an unbeaten Cheney squad in the title game both Schumann and Renyer gave the Cardinals everything they could want and more to finish runner-up in 2021 with a fantastic 23-3 record.
