Michael Moreno & Tyler Brockhoff

After a couple of close calls in the first three weeks of the season the Hiawatha Red Hawks have found the win column the last two weeks to improve to 2-3 on the season.

That includes a 36-13 win on Homecoming last Friday over Jeff West. The pair of sophomore’s, Tyler Brockhoff and Michael Moreno were superb in their performance in the victory as the Red Hawks got plays from all around. Brockhoff and Moreno hooked up for four touchdowns through the air in the win as Tyler only had one incomplete pass in the first half and finished 15-21 for 261 yards with Moreno hauling in 182 of those yards on seven catches. Moreno also has taken on the kicking duties and was 4-5 on PAT’s while making several tackles and a huge stop on a two-point conversion by Jeff West that would’ve got the Tigers to within a touchdown in the second half.

On the season, both Brockhoff and Moreno have put up some strong numbers for a pair of youngsters hoisted into prominent roles. Brockhoff in five games this season is 60-116 for 887 yards with 10 touchdowns, tossing a touchdown in four of the five games and surpassing 130 yards passing in every game. Moreno has racked up 397 yards on 17 catches with seven touchdowns and ran for 195 yards on 33 carries with two scores as he’s scored a touchdown in four of the five games this season and registered 100+ yards total offense in three of the five games.

The Red Hawks look to continue to build this season and for the future with a young team as Holton is the next opponent and then District play looms. Brockhoff and Moreno, along with their teammates, hope to translate recent success to more opportunities on the gridiron.
