Hanover Wildcat Girls & Boys Basketball Teams Sweep 1A-DI State Titles

It’s been a strong year for sports at Hanover high school as the football team won a State title the volleyball team got second at State and the Wildcats added to the trophy case in basketball as the girls and boys basketball teams swept the Class 1A-Division I State titles.

The lady Wildcats entered the State tournament in search of their first ever State win and got that in the first round beating Dighton 49-34 using a 19-7 fourth quarter to seal the win. Hanover was led by Macy Doebele who scored 20 points, while the team converted 23 Dighton turnovers into 19 points. In the Semifinals Twin Valley League rival Centralia stood in the Wildcats way and using a strong start Hanover led 31-20 at the half but had to hold off the Panthers to earn the 58-57 win. Macy and Riley Doebele each had 14 points and Ashton Jueneman scored 12 points, while Wildcats scored 19 points off 22 Centralia turnovers.

The Championship game was a back and forth contest for the Wildcats against Olpe and tied in the final seconds of the game Tianna Lohse drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Hanover girls their first ever State basketball title with a 50-47 win.  Macy Doebele led Hanover with 15 points and Jueneman scored 12 points.

The win finished the season 24-2 for Hanover, their first 20+ win season since 2005-06 while giving them the Class 1A-DI State title.

Hanover boys had a bit of an easier time laying claim to the 1A-DI State title routing all three of their opponents at State for their sixth State title and second in last three years. Wildcats opened State with a 68-46 win over Rural Vista jumping up early to lead 46-21 at the half. Will Bruna led Hanover with 21 points, while Michael Jueneman scored 19 points and the team was 20-29 from the charity stripe. In the Semifinals Hanover cruised past St. Francis leading 35-24 at the half and went on to win 64-44. Bruna netted 31 points, while Jueneman scored 18 points as the team shot 43.9% from the floor.

In the Championship contest Hanover took on the high scoring South Gray but held them to 27.7% shooting and led 31-16 at the half to earn the win 60-36. Jueneman led Hanover with 26 points, while Bruna scored 12 points as the Wildcats shot 48.7% from the floor in the win.

Wildcat boys like the girls wrapped up the season with a 24-2 record winning 20+ games for the third straight year and claiming their sixth State title.
