The Sabetha Bluejays are flying back to the Class 3A State basketball tournament and have been battle tested all season and passed many of those tests with a 22-1 record. One of the key pieces for the Bluejays this season has been the play of senior, Calder Keehn and that continued to be the case last week during Sub-State.
Sabetha started Sabetha at home and cruised past ACCHS in the first round with a 72-42 win in a game in which Keehn scored a season-high 23 points. Moving into the Semifinals at Hiawatha the Bluejays took on an upstart Marysville team and had all their could handle but came out on top with a 56-55 win and Keehn once again was at the forefront of Sabetha’s success in the game posting 23 points.
Into the Sub-State Championship game the Bluejays went where they would take on rival Nemaha Central for the third time this year. Having beaten them in close games the first two times Sabetha knew it would be a tough contest it was as Sabetha needed late free throws in regulation to send the game to overtime and won it 47-44 in OT to head back to the 3A State tournament. Calder was once helping lead the Bluejays has he posted 17 points in the win.
On the season the senior leads the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game, while filling the stat sheet with 6.5 rebounds per game, 2.7 assists per game and 1.5 blocks per game. Of the 23 games played this year Keehn has registered double figures in 18.
The Bluejays won the Burlington Invitational during the season, a tournament in which Keehn was named tourney MVP, while Sabetha also won the Big Seven League this year and the Sub-State title and now have their sights set on more hardware at the 3A State tournament. The senior, Calder Keehn will be a key piece to the Bluejays run at State like he has been all year looking to partner with his teammates and end his Bluejay basketball career in a big way.
