It took one the best all-round performances in the state on Friday in the football season opener for the Atchison Redmen as started the season with a 42-30 win over Pleasant Ridge.
That all-around performance can at the hands and feet of Atchison senior quarterback, Wykeen Gill as he used the his arm and feet to help the Redmen earn the 12-point season opening win over the Rams. Gill through the air was 9-13 passing for 236 yards with three touchdowns, while rushing for 184 yards and two touchdowns.
Down 14-7 at halftime the Redmen needed a spark and that happened in the third quarter as Gill helped orchestra a 21-6 third quarter to give Atchison the lead and ultimately the win. Atchison made it a one-point game with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Gill to Bryce Enzbrenner, then after a strong defensive showing got the ball back and Gill helped lead another touchdown drive to give Atchison the lead and added to that lead later in the third quarter with an electrifying 53-yard touchdown run.
The athletic playmaker showchased his talents on Friday helping lead the Redmen to a 1-0 start of the football season and will not only be looked to for his playmaking ability all season but his leadership also.
