It was something that hasn’t happened in school history for the Jeff West Tigers that is a team State Championship in sports and the lady Tigers softball team accomplished that feat.
The lady Tigers on Monday took down Rock Creek in the Class 4A-DII softball State championship in Topeka, winning 2-1 in eight innings. In the bottom of the eight tied at 1-1, Emma Broxterman was on second for Jeff West with two-outs and Emily Brown delivered the game winning RBI single to score Broxterman for the 2-1 victory.
The State tournament started in impressive fashion for the Tigers as they dispatched Goodland 15-0 in two and half innings to win in the first round. In the Semifinals the Tigers took on the number one seed, Girard and had to come from behind but picked up the 4-3 win to make it into the State championship game.
On the year the Tigers enjoyed a great season capped off with the 4A-DII State title and a 20-4 record, winning games this year by an average of 10.1 runs per game and in their four losses three of them were really competitive as they only fell by two runs or less.
It will be a season to remember for the Jeff West lady Tigers softball team as they won the school’s first team State title.
