Axtell Eagle, Mariah Deters Leaping Onto the Track Scene as a Freshman
Mariah Deters

It's just her first year at the high school level of competition but Axtell Eagle freshman, Mariah Deters has sprinted and leapt onto the track scene in big fashion.

Last week started with action at the Washington County Invitational and Deters leapt to wins in both the high jump and triple jump with marks of 5’04 and 34’03.75, while adding a pair of silver medals in the 100 and 200 meter dashes posting times of 12.71 and 26.81. The freshman’s times in the 100 and 200 were the fastest in competition this season so far.

A performance like the one at the Washington County Invite is a good week but Deters didn’t stop there as she went 4-4 for gold medals at the Valley Heights Invitational later in the week winning all four events she competed in. Mariah leapt to wins in the high jump (5’04), triple jump and long jump and also claimed first in the 200 meter dash (27.53). A leap of 34’08.75 in the triple jump won the event for Deters, her best triple jump mark of the year.

On the year Deters has competed in at least three events in all five track meets for the Axtell Eagles placing third or better in every competition she has competed in, including being unbeaten in the high jump and also winning the triple jump both times she has competed in the event. Her best mark in the high jump came in the season opening track as she registered 5’06, while her best long jump mark is 16’11.50 coming at the Republic County Invite.

Deters has competed in top level track competitions growing up, including competing in AAU Junior Olympic action and now has her sights set on the trip to Wichita at the end of May for a trip to State in her freshman year at Axtell.
