The Troy Trojans had their best season on the gridiron in 10 years as they reached the 2-1A Sub-State level of the playoffs and finished the year 10-2 after falling to Olpe in Sub-State action. Throughout the year Troy got it done with strong offensive showings, but the defense had strong showings throughout the year, also and gave the Trojans a balanced team.
Led by a strong senior class the Trojans found success on the field this year and one of those seniors that helped key the success was Jay Whetstine a two-way starter. Whetstine’s biggest impact came on the defensive side of the ball as he led the team in tackles with 113; averaging 9.4 tackles per game as a tackling machine, that had five games of 10 or more tackles. Jay led a defense that pitched five shutouts on the year including a shutout in the playoffs against Lyndon, while also being the leader of a defense that gave up 11.8 points per game and that forced 29 turnovers, with a pair of defensive touchdowns.
The senior for the second straight season posted 100+ tackles, finishing with 124 in his junior season, which earned him All-State honors.
While Jay’s impact was greatly felt on the defensive side of the ball he was a key piece on the offensive side, too as he helped lead a stout offensive line, playing right guard. The Trojans on offense averaged 42 points per game and 415.7 total yards per game, amassing around 5,000 total yards of offense on the year.
The Troy Trojans closed out their year with a very successful season that saw the Whetstine and his fellow seniors lead the Trojans to success on the field.
