The Horton Chargers have charged out of the gate to a 3-0 record on the football field this season, already matching last year’s win total while besting their start to the 8-2 campaign in 2007.
Last Friday, Horton won the battle of the Chargers routing Jefferson County North 44-0 in a great all-around game from the team. One player that has helped pave the way early this season has been senior, quarterback Derrick Stone, who notched 103 yards and a TD on just six carries against JCN, while being 4-5 for 40 yards on offense.
Stone’s impact didn’t stop on the offensive side of the ball as Horton forced four JCN turnovers picking off four passes, two of which were snatched out of the air by Derrick. Stone took it even further returning one of the interceptions for a score, giving him a TD on both sides of the ball in the 44-0 win, as he netted 62 return yards on his two interceptions in the game. The Horton defense now has 11 interceptions on the season in just three games.
The quarterback on the season has put up 250 yards on 32 carries for a 7.8 yard per carry average, while rushing for five TD’s, is 12-23 for 130 yards (4 INTs) and also caught one pass for a 34-yard TD. On defense Stone has nine tackles as his defensive back spot, with two interceptions and three pass defenses.
Horton looks to continue their early momentum in the season with the play of Stone and his teammates around him when they head to Pleasant Ridge for their third straigth road game in a matchup under the Friday Night Lights in Easton.
