Hiawatha Red Hawk, Brianna Schmitz Continues to Have a Strong Track Season

Improving throughout the athletic season is a goal of all athletes no matter the sport and track and field is no different. Hiawatha Red Hawk senior, Brianna Schmitz has kept pushing herself all season to continually improve and the results continue to be their posting her best marks of the season last week in a stellar performance at the Jeff West Invitational.

Schmitz raced her way to wins in the 200 and 400 meter dashes, while adding a third gold on the day with three of her teammates as part of the Red Hawks 4x400 meter relay team (4:20.87) and also grabbed a silver in the high jump. Brianna posted her best marks of the season in the 200 and 400 meter dashes with times of 26.65 and 1:02.01 taking her to the gold, while also posting her best high jump of year with a leap of 5’2.

The top flight performances haven’t just come recently for the senior as she has put together a strong track season thus far. Schmitz opened the season with two golds at the Holton Invite winning the high jump and being a part of the Red Hawks 4x400 team, while earning silvers in the 200 and 400 meter dashes.

After that at the Holton Quad she took home three first place finishes, being on the 4x400 team again and winning the high jump and 200 meter dash, while taking second in the 400. Next up was competition at the ACCHS Invite this year and Brianna again posted a three gold performance this time winning the 200 and 400 and being on the 4x400 team, while placing third in the high jump.

The Red Hawk senior also competed at the KU Relays this year along with her teammates Jordan Puvogel, Molly Kettler and Kailey Davis as the quartet competed in the distance medley relay and took home seventh place out of 24 competitors with a time of 13:08.34.

Four more meets loom this season before Regionals for Schmitz and her fellow Red Hawk teammates and they have their sights set on improving continually to reach the ultimate goal of the season the State meet in Wichita at the end of May.
