Gaven Schumann & Jacob Frey

Sabetha Bluejays have been flying high all season and have remained unbeaten thus far on the season behind a 3-0 showing at the Burlington Invitational last week, winning the tournament to move to 12-0 on the season.

While the team is playing well with multiple contributors it’s been the senior tandem of Gaven Schumann and Jacob Frey leading the charge for the Bluejays. Both Schumann and Frey have put forth stellar performances all season and that continued during the Burlington Invitational, as the Bluejays beat Rossville 74-43 in the first round, topped Burlington 60-51 in the semifinals and beat Paola 53-39 in the championship.

Schumann posted a double-double in all three competitions during the tournament helping Sabetha win the tourney title and earning Gaven a spot on the All-tournament team and was named the tourney MVP. Gaven started the tournament with 23 points and 11 rebounds against Rossville, followed that with 14 points and 12 rebounds against Burlington and finished the tourney with 10 points and 15 rebounds against Paola. On the year Schumann leads the team in scoring with 14.4 ppg and has posted 8.2 rpg, 2.4 spg and shot 66.7% from two-point range.

Frey over the course of the Burlington Invite put up 12 assists in three games and two double figure point performances, earning him a spot on the tourney All-tournament team. Jacob opened that tournament with a seven point and five assist showing against Rossville, then posted 17 points and five assists against Burlington and finished the tournament with 15 points, three steals and two assists against Paola. On the year Frey averages 12.3 ppg, 5.4 apg and is shooting 40% from three-point land and 76% from the charity stripe.

Bluejays have been challenged this season and answered the call every time so far to remain unbeaten on the season.  Sabetha looks to continue their swag on the court looking to earn a Big Seven League title and their first bid to the 3A State tournament since the 2006-07 season.
