Last year was storybook ending for the Holton Wildcat wrestling squad winning the Class 4A team State championship, but this year has the potential to be an even more dominate year for the Wildcats. Holton continued to dominate their opponents on the mat this year by taking the Burlington Invitational crown this past week with 303 total points, 165.5 points better than second place, overall beating 19 other teams in the competition.
Wildcats started the season preseason ranked number one in Class 4A as a team and have remained their all season winning every tournament and dual they’ve competed in and a big part of Holton’s success this season is the trio of senior’s, Jonah Lutz and Cooper Zeller and junior, Lucas Lovvorn.
Combined the trio all posted 4-0 records this past weekend at the Burlington Invitational each winning their weight classes, as did four other Widlcats for seven first place finishers on the day.
Lutz got things rolling by winning the 132lbs weight class behind three pinfall wins and 9-2 decision victory in the championship bout. On the season Jonah has put together a 15-0 record with 11 pinfall wins that leads the team and is currently ranked third in 4A at 132lbs. Jonah last year placed fifth at State going 4-2 at 126lbs.
The junior, Lovvorn kept things rolling on the day for Holton going 4-0 at 152lbs at the Burlington Invitational winning by posting a pair of pinfall wins, a tech fall win and a 10-2 major decision victory. Lovvorn touts a 16-0 record on the season with nine pinfall wins and currently ranks second in 4A at 152lbs. Lucas took home fourth last year at State going 4-2 at 138lbs.
Zeller capped things off for the Wildcats at the heavyweight division (285lbs) by also going 4-0 at the Burlington Invitational. Cooper started the day with a bye but then posted a 51 second pinfall win before finishing the day with a pair of 2-0 decision victories. Cooper on the season has posted a 14-0 record and is coming off a fifth place finish last year at State after going 4-2.
It’s been a dominate showing’s every time out on the mat this season for Holton with wins piling up for the team and individuals all season and the trio of Jonah Lutz, Lucas Lovvorn and Cooper Zeller all have helped spear head the Wildcats success this year.
