Coming from a small town and playing college basketball, sometimes all it takes is one big week to get yourself noticed.
For former Axtell Eagle Courtney Heinen that was the case last week, as the Kansas Wesleyan product delivered two career games while being named the KCAC Player of the Week for the Coyote women’s basketball team.
Heinen, a junior, was big in both KWU games last week, as against No. 19 Tabor she scored a career-high 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor while knocking down 8-of-9 free throws.
She followed that up with a new career-high 24 points against York with 18 coming in the second half, shooting 7-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from deep while adding four assists and four rebounds.
On the week Heinen averaged 23.5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting over 60 percent from 3-point land.
After leading the Coyotes in scoring last year at 9.4 points per game Heinen started this season ice cold after an ankle injury that set her back, but she has been able to right the ship and has upped her average to 8.4 points and 3.2 rebounds a night.
At Axtell she racked up several awards, earning first team All-Twin Valley League her junior and senior seasons while she was also named an all-state selection her senior year.
Heinen has helped the Coyotes off to an 11-6 record overall and a 9-2 record in the KCAC, as KWU has 12 games remaining in the regular season.
