Former Doniphan West Mustang, McKenzie Blevins Finding Success With Rebooted Washburn Track Program

When the track program was restarted a few years ago at Washburn University it opened opportunities for several athletes including many from Northeast Kansas.

One of those athletes that has taken advantage of that opportunity is former Doniphan West Mustang, McKenzie Blevins. Blevins now in her sophomore year at Washburn competes for the Ichabod’s track and field team.

The Indoor track season is underway and Blevins has competed in the long jump at four competitions for Washburn with the most recent action coming at the UCM Relays were a leap of 15’06.25 earned Kenzie a fifth place finish. Her best jump this season was 15’11.75 and earned Blevins a ninth place finish at the UCM Invitational. She also posted finishes of 20th and 26th place at the Bob Timmons Classic and PSU Crimson & Gold Invite, respectively with leaps of 15’05.50 and 15’02.25.

During her freshman campaign Blevins put together plenty of strong performances during the Indoor and Outdoor track seasons. Those performances included the third best time in the program in the 60m with a time of 8.13 at the PSU Crimson & Gold Invite, while owning the sixth best jump in the long jump (16’01 at MSSU Indoor Invite). She also was part of a 4x100 meter relay team that posted a time of 48.47 for best time in program history, while also tying the fifth best time in the 100m in Outdoor competition with time of 12.82. The former Doniphan West Mustang was also named to the MIAA All-Academic honor roll.

In high school Blevins qualified and competed at the State track competition multiple years and medal in multiple competitions including a fifth place finish in the 200m and seventh in the long jump her senior year. She wrapped up her high school career with schools records in in the 100 and 200 meters, along with the long and triple jumps.

Blevins looks to continuing to find success for the Washburn track and field team as the Ichabod’s continue the track season.
