Baker University has been one of the top teams at the NAIA college level for years and 2017 shapes up to be no different as the Wildcats are ranked #2 nationally and opened the season last Saturday with a 31-27 win over #23 William Penn.
Former Sabetha Bluejay, Kegan Schumann now a junior for the Wildcats played a big factor in the Wildcats securing that season opening win. Schumann who plays linebacker for Baker led the Wildcat defense with 10 tackles on the day, recording six solo tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. He and his fellow defensive teammates allowed William Penn to muster only 181 total yards of offense in the contest. Kegan’s performance to open the season earned him Heart of the America Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Schumann in his career at Baker has played in 20 games registering 51 total tackles, two interceptions and a touchdown. Last year the former Sabetha Bluejay notched 28 tackles, a fumble recovery and two interceptions returning one 27-yards against Benedictine College for a touchdown.
In high school Schumann earned first team All-Big Seven League honors at runningback, inside linebacker and punter his senior year, along with 3A All-State honors at linebacker and honorable mention at runningback. Schumann helped the Bluejays to multiple playoff appearances.
