After a successful high school athletic career that included nine track State titles the former Valley Heights Mustang, Elijah Smith has continued to find success, coming as part of the Butler Community College track and field team.
Smith currently in his sophomore year is part of a Butler men’s track team that ranks second in the NJCAA Division I track poll. Elijah has put together a strong start to the Outdoor season as he opened the Outdoor portion of the year by leaping to first place finishes at the Reynolds Invite in the long jump (22’06.50) and triple jump (46’04.25). He followed that up with a first place in the triple jump (45’01.75) at the Grizzly Classic and also took fifth in the long jump at the same competition.
During the Indoor season this year Smith was part of a second straight Region VI Indoor Championship for Butler as he finished second in the triple jump (47’09.75) and fifth in the long jump (22’06.50), qualifying for Nationals in the triple jump.
As a freshman the former Valley Heights Mustang was a part of some great success for Butler Community College men’s track team. In the Outdoor season the Butler men finished third at Nationals as a team and Smith earned a ninth place finish in the triple jump (48’04.75), while also taking 13th in the long jump. During the Indoor season Butler put together a sixth place team finish at Nationals and Smith competed at Nationals in three events long jump (18th place), triple jump (11th place) and 60 meter hurdles.
In high school Smith compiled several State medals including nine State titles in Class 1A winning the 110 meter hurdles and triple jump his sophomore, junior and senior years, while taking first in the long jump his junior and senior years and also winning the 300 meter hurdles his senior year. In 2015 his senior season he won four events and set the school and 1A State record in the triple jump (48’09.75). Smith owns four Valley Heights track records in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles along with the long and triple jumps.
The former Valley Heights Mustang looks to wrap up his Butler career with a strong Outdoor track season and perhaps continue his track career further at other school after the school year.
