Lacrosse is a sport that is popular in certain parts of the country more than others but is starting to gain more interest in the Midwest including at Benedictine College in Atchison.
Benedictine women’s lacrosse team is in just their second year as a varsity sport at the College after becoming a varsity sport last year a season in which they finished 9-5 and won their conference while also qualifying for the NAIA National tournament.
A former Royal Valley Panther athlete is finding success on the lacrosse field for Benedictine as Clare Hanson who is now a junior is a starter for the Raven’s lacrosse team starting in 10 of the 11 games played so far this season playing at mid-fielder and draw specialist, while serving as a team captain. Hanson and the Ravens are 9-2 on the season and unbeaten in KCAC play riding a current six-game win streak and are receiving votes for the NAIA Top 10 poll and were ranked earlier in the season.
Hanson who went out for the club team as a freshman has been a key piece to the team last year and this season and had recorded nine goals and four assists so far in her junior campaign. The former Panther has shot 37 times on the season with 22 shots on goal, while recording 12 ground balls and 20 draw controls.
In high school Hanson was a multi-sport athlete competing at Royal Valley in volleyball, basketball, softball.
Hanson and the lady Raven lacrosse team looks to finish the season strong with one regular season match left on Saturday, April 8th and then prepare for the KCAC Tournament.
