Sidney Blackburn

The Highland Community College women’s basketball program has enjoyed plenty of success of the recent years and the team is off to a great start in the 2016-17 campaign with a 17-1 record.

Scotties have a team full of strong athletes and from top to bottom of the roster the team’s gets contributors all around including from former Valley Heights Mustang, Sidney Blackburn who is in her second season at Highland.

Blackburn has played and started in all 18 games this season for the fourth ranked NJCCA Division II Highland Scotties posting five points, 2.7 rebounds and one assist per game this year. The former Valley Heights Mustang has notched double figures three times this year netting a season high 12 points twice against Missouri Valley College JV and Bacone College JV, while recording her best rebounding game of the year in the Missouri Valley game also grabbing seven boards.

As a freshman, Blackburn saw times in all 31 games for the Scotties averaging seven points and 5.9 rebounds per game, while recording double figures in 10 games. Her best game as a Scottie came against the Midwest Mavericks who scored 19 points.

In high school Blackburn was a great multiple sport athlete finding success on the basketball court along with volleyball and track and field. Sidney helped guided the Mustangs to a 1A-Division I State runner-up finish in 2014 her junior year; the season is one of the best in Valley Heights school history as they finished 24-2. She also was a strong track and field athlete winning the 1A State discus title both her junior and senior years, while Valley Heights won the girls State 1A track title in 2014 and finished second in 2015 with Blackburn as a part of the team.

The Highland lady Scotties have their sights set on a big run this season and Blackburn figures to continue to be on the fold as the Scotties look to continue to roll and finish the regular season strong in preparation for a postseason run.
