The University of St. Marys Spires volleyball team is off to a 10-6 start this season. Part of the reason for the early season success is due to former Atchison High standout Mattie Dougherty.
Mattie is currently 5th on the team in digs. The 5’7 defensive specialist spent time last season at Allen County Community before making the jump to St. Marys.
As a freshman, Dougherty had major contributions as well for Allen County as she posted over 230 digs which had her third on the team in her first year at the collegiate level.
She arrived at Allen County after a strong career at Atchison where she was named a first-team all-KCA League selection her final three seasons. In her senior season she really shined, posting over 220 kills and over 275 digs while racking up 62 aces as well.
Mattie has appeared in 14 of the teams 16 matches and they’ll continue their season tonight with a match-up against Tabor College.
