The 2019 football season for Kansas State was the year of local standouts as four area athletes saw significant time for the Wildcats.
One of those guys was former Atchison Redmen Wykeen Gill Jr. who started at the receiver spot from game No. 1 and saw the spotlight in the Cats bowl game loss to Navy last week as he led the team in receiving with 57 yards.
His biggest contribution was a 42-yard reception on K-State’s final drive which ended with a game-tying touchdown before Navy went on to kick the game-winning field goal as time expired.
On the season Gill caught 16 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns while in his career has caught 23 passes for 327 yards.
In his time at Atchison High School Gill Jr. was a standout at quarterback throwing for 2,089 yards and 25 touchdowns in his career while adding another 1,572 yards and 28 scores on the ground.
He was a two-time all-state selection on the football field where he was the Kansas City-Atchison League Player of the Year in both his junior and senior seasons.
Gill Jr. was not only a football standout but also earned all-state honors on the basketball court as both a junior and senior.
Gill Jr. will look to lead the Cats to an even better bowl game next year after a solid junior campaign which will earn him a spot heading into 2020.
